UNDERSTANDING LEASH PRESSURE: IS IT MEAN, OR DOES YOUR DOG NOT UNDERSTAND IT YET?

Many owners believe leash pressure is mean, but when taught correctly, it can become a form of communication.

1. CALM DOG = CLEAR COMMUNICATION

When your dog is calm and focused, gentle leash guidance can communicate stop, slow down, or check in with me. But your dog must first learn what that pressure means.

2. EXCITED DOG = MORE TENSION

When your dog is already tense, frustrated, or overstimulated, leash pressure may increase arousal and cause them to pull harder. Timing and state of mind matter!

3. WHY A HARNESS DOESN’T ALWAYS SOLVE THE PROBLEM

Many owners switch to a harness to protect their dog’s neck, which is understandable. However, changing equipment doesn’t automatically teach loose-leash walking. Some harnesses can make pulling easier, while others help manage it.

4. TEACH LOOSE-LEASH WALKING

• Use treats or toys to reward walking beside you.

• Encourage your dog back before the leash becomes tight.

• Reward check-ins and keep the leash loose.

• If your dog becomes overstimulated, create distance and help them settle.

THE BIG QUESTION:

Before applying leash pressure, ask yourself: Is my dog calm enough to understand what I’m communicating, or am I adding pressure to an already overwhelmed dog?

The goal isn’t to overpower your dog. It’s to build communication, understanding, and safer walks. Never yank or force a frightened or reactive dog.
