IS PICKING UP YOUR SMALL DOG DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD?
Many small-dog owners have a habit of picking up their dogs and holding them like babies whenever they bark or react around other dogs. (I’m not talking about separating dogs during a scuffle or an emergency.) But constantly picking your dog up when they act out can reinforce the pattern instead of teaching them how…

IS YOUR SMALL DOG OVERPROTECTIVE?
Many small dogs bark or alert when another dog or person approaches. You may think it’s harmless, but it can be a sign that your dog feels the need to monitor and control their surroundings. IS YOUR DOG ALWAYS EATING THINGS THEY SHOULDN’T? YOU MAY NEED TO LOOK AT THEIR FOOD BOWL!
Your dog is picking up trash, eating things off the ground, digging through garbage, or constantly searching for something to eat. Now add unfamiliar dogs getting in their face, and that…

YOUR DOG DOESN’T HAVE TO GREET EVERY DOG. YOUR DOG NEEDS TO LEARN SELF-CONTROL.
One of the biggest challenges I see with pet owners is the lack of boundaries around other dogs. The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test evaluates whether your dog can remain calm and under control in everyday situations. One exercise requires your dog to remain calm while you talk with another handler whose dog is…

UNDERSTANDING LEASH PRESSURE: IS IT MEAN, OR DOES YOUR DOG NOT UNDERSTAND IT YET?
Many owners believe leash pressure is mean, but when taught correctly, it can become a form of communication. 1. CALM DOG = CLEAR COMMUNICATION When your dog is calm and focused, gentle leash guidance can communicate stop, slow down, or check in with me. But your dog must first learn what that pressure means. 2.…

YOUR DOG DOESN’T HAVE TO GREET EVERY DOG OR PERSON THEY SEE!
One of the biggest misconceptions in dog ownership is that a well-socialized dog should want to interact with everybody. That’s simply not true. Some dogs don’t want all that attention. They don’t want people constantly reaching for them, talking to them, or expecting them to engage. Some dogs are perfectly comfortable sharing space with others…

A lot of people come to me looking for advice about their dogs, and the truth is, many behavioral problems can be improved with something as simple as consistent daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. In this clip, Rip, the French Bulldog, is biting on the leash. Why? Because that pent-up energy needs an outlet.…
